Q: Can students use their music / books at recitals?
A: Our preference, and our students’ goal, is to perform from memory. That said, we believe it is super important that students perform, in any manner they wish, even if that means using their music / books, performing smaller or even incomplete portions of their music, or having a teacher perform with them.
If students use music / books, we recommend a “best practice” approach, which is to use a black binder or folder/cover and put only the music they will use inside (make photocopies as needed). The goals are to strive for a better appearance, to make it easier to find and turn to the music pages they will play, to avoid loose sheets on the piano, and not having to bring their regular lesson books to recitals.
Sometimes a student with a longer piece wants to spread out multiple sheets of music across the music stand. This is acceptable, too.
We always strive to memorize music, even if we don’t get all the way there!
And remember, students can and should play the same music for multiple recitals, Forums, and masterclasses, etc., ever striving to develop a repertoire of memorized music that can be played any time, anywhere, for anyone. (We don’t want to reinforce the incorrect idea that we should be preparing for a once-and-done recital performance. The pros perform the same music hundreds of times, often for a lifetime! This is one of the reasons why they become so skilled as musicians, and so confident on stage!)

Have a magical Friday, a musical weekend, and a safe, happy, and healthy coming week(s).
