October 17, 2025: Friday Medley

Happy Friday!

Remember, every student can perform at our recitals! Even toddlers, and even very beginners who have had only one lesson, or just a few lessons!

Why? Because our recitals are joyful, easy-going, friendly music-making opportunities, where a supportive audience of friends and families gather together to enjoy the musical and theatrical performances of others. While some students may be performing a large repertoire or more substantial works, other students are getting up on stage for the very first time. And that’s important, and enough!

Plus, students get their names in the program, receive recital certificates and gift bags, sometimes we offer treats, play games, or host raffles in the lobby, everyone is encouraged to dress up (dressy and/or sometimes in costume), and we offer opportunities for individual, group, and family photos! We strive to make our recitals fun and memorable occasions for everyone.

Performing for others should be enjoyable and rewarding experiences. At the Dennis Frayne Music Studios, we hold frequent recitals and provide many performance opportunities in order to help make performing music easier and less stressful. Sometimes, we want to show off a big accomplishment — like a piano piece we have worked on for a long time and perfected. But we don’t have to do that! Other times, we can show the audience what we are working on, perhaps part of a piece that is not yet fully learned.

And, we can perform some pieces more than once — the way professionals do! (Some students are performing every month of the year and more, and participating regularly in Forum, our semi-regular practice-performing sessions.) In this way, we help music students reduce performance anxiety and the feeling that playing the piano, playing their instrument, or singing is an all-or-nothing, succeed-or-fail, high-stakes activity! It’s not — it’s making music together!

Even with this more nurturing philosophy about recitals and performances, ambitious students can still work hard on perfecting more difficult pieces and preparing for exams, auditions, and competitions. Those goals are for those who want to strive for them — they’re not necessary for everyone!

Each student can be the performer they want to be. And each student is free to grow and evolve, set new goals, and change over time!

Q: Do you have a Facebook page?

A: Yes! We have a Facebook page for each music school and studio, for USASB (the Unschool Academy of Art, Science, and Business), the Presto! It’s Piano Magic curriculum, and Scholarship Squirrel, our not-for-profit 501(c)3 organization that receives donations for scholarships and musical instruments for students and families in need.

We encourage everyone to Like and Follow our pages! Also, my personal Facebook page is public, because I use it mostly for writing and posting about music and education topics, and engaging the wider community in education-related discussions. I will accept people who ask to be Friends!
