🎵 Why Do People Take Music Lessons? 🎵

Because they’re ready to grow.

At Dennis Frayne Music Studios and the Laguna Niguel & Lake Forest Schools of Music, students of all ages come to music lessons for big reasons. Whether it’s a child learning focus and gaining confidence, a teen preparing for exams or auditions, or an adult finally carving out time to reconnect with creativity, music lessons are about more than learning notes—they’re about building life skills.

Music gives students the tools to express themselves, relieve stress, set and reach goals, and connect with others. For some, it’s about achieving excellence and earning a spot in honors band or college. For others, it’s about finding joy and pride in something uniquely theirs. No matter the reason, our music studios provide expert guidance and a welcoming, upbeat environment that makes learning music not only effective—but meaningful.

Let’s turn your “someday” into today. Because the best time to start music lessons… is now.

🎵 Why Do People Take Music Lessons at Dennis Frayne Music Studios? 🎵

Bccause at Dennis Frayne Music Studios, music lessons are musical, joyous, healthy, and rewarding. Our teachers respect, honor, value, believe in, and nurture each and every child, student, and family.

Our teachers are trained, mentored, and coached in curriculum, methods, and strategies that build student-teacher rapport, increase student self-confidence, and affirm each individual person’s interests, musical tastes, learning styles, and sense of self-worth. Music lessons take place in healthy, tension-free learning environments.

Students progress at a pace that keeps them interested, enthusiastic, and wanting more. Students who begin music lessons here are not damaged, but they blossom and flourish — and in fact many of our students come here to heal.

We offer music lessons at our Laguna Niguel School of Music and Lake Forest School of Music studio locations, as well as in-home and online lessons.

Why Dennis Frayne Music Studios have become South Orange County’s #1 choice for music lessons.

The Dennis Frayne Music Studios are South Orange County's largest music school, teaching hundreds of students from the very youngest ages to adult. Whatever instrument you or your child wish to play, odds are we teach it: Piano, Acoustic, Electric, & Bass Guitar, Drums & Percussion, Voice & Singing, Banjo, Mandolin, Ukulele, Harp, Violin, Viola, Cello, Double Bass, Clarinet, Flute, Trumpet, Trombone, Tuba, French horn, Music Theory, Composition, & Songwriting, and Music Production, all taught under one roof.

We are also the only music schools in South Orange County with state-of-the-art instruments, technology, & electronics, including LED monitors, in each lesson room. This way you can bring your iPhone, iPad, or any mobile device to enhance your music lesson. We give our students the BEST music education experience in the area that no one else can offer.

“We have been with Dr. Dennis for a few years, and we love his ability to allow ‘space’ for kids to be themselves. He is a child whisperer, making music something fun to do, allowing the kids to explore their creativity and personal interests instead of dictating a specific speed of learning or practice time or choice of music. This approach is very much unlike the rigid structured style of piano teaching that I've seen in the past. I think it allows my children to look forward to their time with him, as they explore their abilities with a smile and an interest.”

The top twelve reasons why your child should take music lessons at Dennis Frayne Music Studios

(and nowhere else!)

  • ONE

At Dennis Frayne Music Studios, music lessons are musical, joyous, healthy, and rewarding.

  • TWO

So your child develops tension-free and problem-free technical skill, superior musical and playing ability, and performance confidence.

Truthfully, most piano studios and music schools operate in ways that cause damage to a high percentage of students as described above. This is evidenced by the large numbers of students who quit music study, who make very slow progress, who are afraid to perform on stage, who never have any music ready to play on the spot or from memory for others, who struggle to find the right “position” on the piano keyboard before playing (note: pianos do not have positions; if your child is being taught “piano hand positions” you should stop lessons with that teacher), who grimace and apologize as they play, who are unmusical, and who lack self-confidence even after (or because of) years of lessons.

  • THREE

So your child receives joyous music instruction in a healthy learning environment.

It is so important to address the unfortunate yet critical fact that many young children are damaged by unskilled and ill-informed (even if well-intentioned) piano teachers, voice teachers, music schools, and poorly-designed curricula and methods. This damage shows up as hesitancy, unease, fear, anxiety, tentativeness, stress, bodily tension, physical pain, self-doubt, lack of self-confidence, low self-esteem, frustration from little or no progress after years of lessons, even anger and hating piano lessons, music classes at school, or being unwilling to sing.

This damage can last a lifetime. It is caused by teachers’ poor choice of curriculum, stressful, tedious, and boring teaching methods and strategies, unmusical lesson sequencing, the use of gimmicks and forced shortcuts rather than developing natural playing technique, unhealthy learning environments, narrowminded views toward some music genres that youth love, high-stakes succeed-or-fail performance philosophies, infrequent positive, rewarding performance opportunities, and subtle or not-so-subtle shaming of students.

  • FOUR

We teach all students of all ages, all interests, and all ability levels. Everyone can achieve in music and at the piano or instrument of their choice, including singing. Everyone can make progress at a pace they are proud of. Everyone can learn to play the music they love and enjoy most.

We teach everyone, and you or your child, the way you learn, at the right pace for you and your needs and interests, and in a manner most rewarding for you and most fulfilling for your goals and dreams.

Most piano teachers and music teachers blame students for their lack of success. They will say students are either talented or untalented, musical or unmusical, “naturals” or not, hard workers or lazy, practice or don’t practice, dedicated or undedicated, have ability or don’t have ability, etc. At Dennis Frayne Music Studios, you will never hear us say such things. We teach students of all ages, all interests, and all ability levels, and everyone succeeds to the level they desire!

  • FIVE

Because we have the highest quality, skilled, certified, and most experienced music teachers in South Orange County. Our piano and guitar teachers are trained in and become certified in the Presto! It’s Piano / Guitar Magic curriculum, teaching methods, and strategies. Our teachers engage in ongoing professional development, perform music, and are active in the music education world and the local community. Our faculty includes teachers with music degrees, music certificates, masters degrees, doctorate degrees, State of California teaching credentials in music education, special education, and many have more than one teaching credential.

In addition to their teaching credentials and experience, our teachers have warm personalities, are extremely friendly, treat each person as unique and valued individuals, and are dedicated to teaching you the styles of music that you want to learn in the way you learn best.

  • SIX

Because we are the only local music school who teaches piano & guitar using the proprietary Presto! It’s Piano / Guitar Magic curriculum and method series. This curriculum plays a significant role in our ability to customize the pacing of lessons — whether individual private or group lessons — to the needs, desires, and goals of each student.

Whether a fast, accelerated, or more leisurely approach is desired, we teach the way you want to learn. Progress is faster than other schools even at our more “leisurely” pace. (Ask us about our Music Teachers Association of California Certificate of Merit piano pacing comparison, strategy, and path to completion of exams.)

  • SEVEN

Because we offer many performance opportunities, including music recitals and concerts in various locations and venues, ranging from in-home soirees and piano parties to world class music halls and our destination recitals.

Our forums (practice performances among peers) and masterclasses help students become comfortable playing in front of others, and with others, in ensembles, small groups, and combos. Students develop self-confidence performing on stage, and this self-confidence translates into other areas of their education, career, and life.

  • EIGHT

Because we have a comfortable parent lounge and workspace for siblings to read, do arts and crafts, play with toys and puzzles, and do homework. We stock a variety of materials and supplies for everyone’s use.

We also provide large observation windows so that you can watch your child's individual private lesson while you wait. Or if you prefer you can sit in on their individual private lesson at any time. (Please see our Open Door Policy.)

  • NINE

Because we offer early morning, noon-time, and early afternoon lessons for homeschoolers, retirees, college students, and working professionals. We offer lessons as early as 7:00 a.m. and we teach many students in the morning, afternoon, and evening. Lessons include “Mommy & Me” and Pre-Piano classes for very young children and their parents, and our one-of-a-kind “Piano & Brew” for adults who wish to add a social aspect to group piano lessons.

If you are a homeschool parent, retiree, college student, or working professional who has a flexible schedule, take advantage of our early morning and early afternoon lesson spots.

  • TEN

Because we support teachers, music education, the arts, youth, and education in the community. We care about our students, our teachers, and our community.

Our teachers are dedicated employees who believe in our school, our teaching methods, our philosophies, and strategies, and plan to stay with us for a long time; not independent contractors who are less focused, less skilled, less accountable, unsupervised, and come and go.

Although we are a for-profit organization we give generously to local non-profits, schools, youth programs, and scholarship funds. We offer scholarship opportunities to students & families in financial need, and we offer discounts to seniors and military & first-responder families.

  • ELEVEN

Because we offer a money-back guarantee! Most music schools require a month’s tuition upfront that is non-refundable if you decide to quit. While our tuition is also paid upfront, if you decide to quit because you are unsatisfied with your or your child’s progress at the piano, musical instrument, or singing, we will refund you the entire last month’s tuition. Yes, that’s a full month! We don’t think this will happen, but if it does, not only will we *not* keep your tuition for unused lessons, but we will give you the last month’s tuition back if you decide to quit because you are not satisfied with the music student’s progress or pace of learning. (There is no other music school that offers this guarantee!)

  • TWELVE

Located on Crown Valley Pkwy in the heart of Laguna Niguel, and in Lake Forest in the Baker Ranch area, our schools are convenient to many areas of South Orange County. Close to our school, you will find great shopping, dining, and even the beach! Our location is convenient to (and we have many students from) Aliso Viejo, Dana Point, San Juan Capistrano, Irvine, Ladera Ranch, Laguna Beach, Laguna Hills, Laguna Niguel, Laguna Woods, Lake Forest, Baker Ranch, Foothill Ranch, Trabuco Canyon, Mission Viejo, Rancho Mission Viejo, Rancho Mission Viejo, Rancho Santa Margarita, and Coto de Caza.

Dr. Dennis Frayne

Message from Our Founder

The ability to play an instrument or sing beautifully offers a lifetime of benefits. Music lessons also foster a student’s personal, social, and academic development. The Dennis Frayne Music Studios have made substantial investments in our facilities and elite faculty to provide an uplifting environment designed to foster creativity, confidence, and joy.

If you’ve been told you are tone deaf or uncoordinated, I’m here to assure you that everyone can improve their musical skills. As a musician, composer, director, former public school teacher, and Doctor of Education, I've witnessed thousands of students transform their lives in ways they never imagined possible. We make it our mission to help South Orange County students explore and develop their talents, wherever their curiosity and interests lead them.

  • “We love Dr. Dennis! He is so good at fostering a love for music even though it can be so technical. Our kids have had so many opportunities to play in front of people and in different venues which has helped them to be comfortable performing on demand.”

    — Annie M.

  • “Dr. Dennis is very encouraging and patient. He also cares very much about his students being lifelong pianists so he makes sure that my son is enjoying what he is playing and regularly allows him to learn/play pieces he is interested in. In that same vein, Dr. Dennis is great at picking pieces that he knows my son will enjoy; my son will simultaneously be learning a Beethoven movement and a contemporary piece like Bohemian Rhapsody. We are very happy and grateful to have Dr. Dennis as our piano teacher!”

    — Bonnie L.

  • “Dr. Dennis has the skills, dedication, and personality to be one of those teachers that truly makes a difference. He provides motivation backed up by experience in music and theater, he works from a central core of kindness while challenging others to do their best, and he is organized, determined, and dedicated to his work.”

    — Carolyn B.

  • "Dr. Dennis runs an amazing school where he encourages students to be creative and perform even at the young age of 2. The school is a welcoming and fun environment. The teachers are caring and supportive. There are ample opportunities to learn and grow musical talent. I would highly recommend this school to anyone wanting to pursue music lessons. I am so glad that I started my daughter at such a young age and that I found a school where she feels so comfortable.

    — Laura K.

  • "Being musician and an instructor myself, I know when a teacher is quality and Dr. Dennis is passionate about teaching music, and it shows in everything he does. You are in good, caring, compassionate hands with him!"

    — Diana C.

Dennis Frayne Music Studios teaches many instruments, including piano, guitar, drums, strings, wind, brass, and voice. Our central focus is piano lessons, because of the high demand, and due to the unique position of the piano as an important instrument for all musicians.

Music lessons advance and enrich educational and life goals. Healthy, positive, thoughtful, and rewarding music lessons can contribute not only to the development of musical skills and creativity but also to leadership, critical thinking, and performance confidence — whether that confidence is on stage, in school, in career and profession, and in life.

Of vital importance is each student’s positive experience while learning. Bad experiences can produce harmful effects. An inexperienced teacher, poorly sequenced curriculum, outdated methods (even if popular or common), confusing approaches to learning, and improper teaching of technique, have negative impacts. Many students lose self-confidence and develop physical and mental problems from unwitting teachers that set them back, and must be worked out, solved, healed, and hopefully new progress made later.

At Dennis Frayne Music Studios, you and your children will experience something completely different: creativity, positive experiences, rewarding efforts, development of critical thinking skills, superior technical skills, advanced musical skills, exceptional playing ability, and remarkable self-confidence.

At Dennis Frayne Music Studios, our approaches and strategies are singular, unique, distinctive — and superior. We teach better. Students learn better. Our curriculum and methods have been developed over many years of thoughtful, nurturing, progressive, student-centered teaching philosophies backed by child-development expertise. Students come here to gain confidence. Students come here to experience excellence. Students come here to overcome obstacles. Students come here to heal.

Students come here to become creative, thoughtful, critical thinkers and doers. And students come here to learn the piano.
